My People...

In November 2009, a group of colleagues were ask to write about "My People". Prior to this we thought or at least knew who our brothas and sistahs were. As part of this assignment, I had to search my experiences of life, love, and hardship in order to focus on the topic. Looking around the room; an emotional change induced a mental composition about who are "My People."
In conceptualizing this statement, I thought about many individuals and groups I'm associated and/ or grew up with. I wanted to be true and align this narrative with actual people and individuals. While trying to be religiously, politically, and culturally correct in determining my answer. This exercise opened my mind about who held my concern, my value and respect. Subsequently I embraced new relationships into my affection. A moment I recently felt its meaning again, and it still holds true today. The following was my thought.....
"My People are tough strong minded individuals of various thoughts and backgrounds, not all Muslims. People who are appreciative, but should not be taken for granted. Very respectful to prevent disrespect. Smart people who guard against deceit. My people are playful and love to have fun when necessary; grateful and down to earth people."
